Quick Review – Aces Wild: A Heist

Aces Wild: A Heist. Some people join chess club, some people play football. Jack Shannon runs a secret blackjack ring in his private school’s basement. What else is the son of a Las Vegas casino mogul supposed to do?

Everything starts falling apart when Jack’s mom is arrested for their family’s ties to organized crime. His sister Beth thinks this is the Shannon family’s chance to finally go straight, but Jack knows that something’s not right. His mom was sold out, and he knows by who. Peter Carlevaro: rival casino owner and jilted lover. Gross.

Jack hatches a plan to find out what Carlevaro’s holding over his mom’s head, but he can’t do it alone. He recruits his closest friends—the asexual support group he met through fandom forums. Now all he has to do is infiltrate a high-stakes gambling club and dodge dark family secrets, while hopelessly navigating what it means to be in love while asexual. Easy, right?

Note: I’m coming to realize that I don’t always have the motivation to write more than quick review for books. Normally I like to lay out all of the pros & cons, but this is especially hard to do when I enjoyed the majority of the book. So today, I thought I would start with a new section of “quick reviews” to give a couple of main thoughts on this book and my overall rating. I hope you all enjoy!

Representation:  white demiromantic asexual cis male MC, nonbinary asexual LI, basically all asexual cast. NBiLM Romance.

The perfect book if you like heists and are looking for ace representation!

This was such a hilarious and fun read. Super quick and gave me Percy Jackson vibes for some reason even though it’s contemporary and has no magic or mythology at all. Absolutely loved the ace representation!

There were parts that definitely were predictable, but I still really enjoyed it. I actually liked it so much that I finished it, convinced my husband to read it, and it was our “road trip” book so I listened to it again while driving to our vacation!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
